Diary of a Mad Woman had a moment of self doubt the other day. A totally unwarranted lack of confidence that spilled over, yet it was a completely understandable human moment, because who among us has not felt the same at one time or another?
I came across this exceedingly powerful excerpt (from his 1994 inaugural speech) at a time in my life when I was confused; it changed my internal dialogue & allowed me to accept & love myself more readily. I still turn to these words whenever I feel overcome and immediately I feel impacted & uplifted as if I were reading them for the first time.
I share my favourite quotation here with you all and hope that the power of his words will resonate positively in your life.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born instead to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us; it's in everyone! And, as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others!"
His Excellency Nelson Mandela
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 1993

That is pretty strong words right there.
ReplyDeleteHoly Crap.
ReplyDeleteThats Big.
This is the first time I have read these words and I like'em. I see them as saying be proud of who you are and inspire others to meet your standards.
ReplyDeleteWow. I've never come across this quote before, or the idea of looking at things this way. I like this very much. :)

Whoa! Venom bubala, thanks for that. Every now and then I forget how magnificent I am. And you.
ReplyDeleteWell-played, Venom. Nice choice.
ReplyDeleteSy: Velkommin, hope to see you more often. Warning though, I am really NOT nice. Not NICE at all. Plenty of people would vouch.
ReplyDeleteSmitty: Not a big Jewish community where I'm from, what exactly IS a bubala? But you're right, we ARE magnificent.
Sass: His strength in the face of adversity is something to which I could only hope to aspire.

A Yiddish(Jewish) word, traditionally used by Grandmothers, that references children. The modern usage of the word can be extended to any person that is considered darling and close to one's heart. Answered - 133 days ago at 3:43pm on Sep 12 2010 from www.urbandictionary.com
I love this quote. Also attributed to Marianne Williamson. Also quoted in Akeelah and the Bee. Great movie

There are always people waiting in the wings to smack you down too. Living up to your potential is a tough order.
ReplyDeleteSmitty: So what I'm getting from this then is that I am perhaps childlike (or childish, either way...), darling and close to your heart -- I'll take that. Ass kicking suspended.
ReplyDeleteMichelle: Williamson the journalist quoted Mandela in a speech; somehow the internet wrongly decided those were her words.
Vic: Tall order indeed - words to aspire to.
That is most excellent and I will be printing out a copy to stick on my bathroom mirror. What better place to have to face yourself and get a good old fashioned 'what for'.
ReplyDeleteThank you VSL! You rocked it.
Now off to check out the Diary link.
Truly wise words...it's taking me time to process them though, and more importantly, believe them, but I spend some time daily trying to convince myself. I guess I gotta start somewhere, eh? xx
